Review: Jcorporate Expresso

Summary

Jcorporate Expresso is a Web development framework that is available for free and is open source. One of the small (but growing) group of commercial companies focusing on open-source development, Jcorporate has taken a unique approach to this market by offering the framework and a few minor components at no cost, but charging for more robust software such as enterprise integration and content management. Though Jcorporate needs a little work on their image and communicating their idea, I found that they have a pretty good product and a pretty good business model. This is something to definitely take a look at and maybe even try for an upcoming Web project. More Information

Introduction

Though I am continually looking, I have yet to see the perfect business model that involves the open-source software development model. Sure companies like Sun Microsystems and IBM can be supportive with directives like NetBeans (IBM) and Eclipse (Sun). That's a different story--they already have market leverage, marketing dollars and developer mind share. What I'm talking about is the start-ups, the companies looking for revolutionary new ways to deliver software and add value in a new way. Utilizing open source to eliminate development costs, while at the same time offering something valuable and unique from whatever open-source project they are capitalizing on. RedHat can't be the only one.

One company who appears to be succeeding keeps popping back into my houghts; Jcorporate. Jcorporate is the mastermind behind Expresso, a Web application development framework that has a number of plug-in applications that include content management, forums, polls and enterprise integration. What I like about their business model is that they actually use their VARs (Value-Added Resellers) to help customize and further their applications and in the Web development world this really makes sense, every client requires additional customization and features. Allowing for numerous VARs to contribute these additional features and advancements betters the underlying software and makes it a win/win situation for both the VARs and the software company. That said, let's take a look at Jcorporate's offerings.
